Sarasota-Manatee Community Unites Again for the 15th year to Raise Awareness for Suicide Prevention
At 9 a.m. on October 8th, 2023, Nathan Benderson Park will host its yearly walk for the Southwest Florida Chapter, originally started in 2008. The Sarasota volunteers will join millions across the country, in the fight to prevent suicide.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention was founded in 1987, the first organization of its kind to educate families and individuals in the nation on the importance of creating a community that is smarter about mental health. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for ages 25-34 and the third-leading cause for ages 10-24.
Last year, AFSP walks across the country raised more than $21 million for suicide prevention, education, and support programs. Sarasota’s walk alone, had more than 400 people at Nathan Benderson Park for the Out of the Darkness walk, including guest host Nick Wallenda and Tiffany “Juggling the Jenkins” Jenkins, raising over $60,000 dollars towards AFSP’S education and support programs.
Funds raised from The Out of the Darkness Walks allow AFSP to fund research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy and support survivors of suicide loss. In efforts to maximize funds contributed, AFSP utilized 83% of every donor dollar on research and program initiatives, well above industry standards.
