New Decade, New Laws

Several new laws will go into effect across Florida this new year.

Texting and Driving

Texting and driving became illegal in July, with officers warning drivers that were caught but beginning January 1, 2020 officers can start ticketing drivers caught breaking this law. First offense drivers will receive a $30 fine, second offense drivers within a five-year period will receive a $60 fine and three points to their license, and every offense after that will result in an automatic $60 fine and three points on their license. The texting ban will not apply to drivers using their phones for navigation, answering a phone call, or while the vehicle is stopped.

Other Notable Laws

On the first of the new year the minimum wage will increase 10 cents, from $8.46 to $8.56 an hour across the state. Also, going into effect is a new bill that states handwritten prescriptions will no longer be allowed, requiring doctors to electronically submit the prescriptions to pharmacies. Additionally, a new tax bill that includes a tax exemption for disaster preparedness supplies.

Have a great new year and remember, don’t text and drive!
